Lightning Round with Romario Vidal: The Great Thing About Doomsday is…

Welcome to the first installment of Lightning Round, where we “sit down” with someone from the magic community and ask a few quick questions. Our keynote speaker? Romario Vidal, Legacy streamer and  recent Legacy Super Qualifier finalist piloting the all too fitting for now deck, Doomsday.

The great thing about Doomsday is…

Romario: No one believes you when you say the card is actually good and can win matches.

Mana Tutor’s own storm aficionado, Michael Clifford wants to know when you realized dark ritual was better than Chalice of the Void?

Romario: When I started casting Doomsday on turn two followed by “Romariovidal wins the match.”

What don’t you want to see across the “table” when you’re playing Doomsday?

Romario: decks that play small creatures that tax my mana (I am looking at you Maverick and DnT). I used to hate playing against BR reanimator, but after I added the leylines to my sideboard I feel pretty good about the match up.

How do you prepare for a tournament like this?

Romario: I played four leagues with similar lists to what I played in the qualifier, as usual if I can do 4-1 or better with a list then that’s the deck I will play in the next important event I play.  I also read and asked some questions on the doomsday discord server, eventually I came up with my final list. Honestly, I wasn’t too worried about playing the tournament. I found out the MOCS (Magic Online Championship Series) points were about to reset sometime soon and I didn’t want to just waste the ones I had accumulated, which was enough to play in two large events. I woke up twenty minutes before the starting time, thought about for a bit if I wanted to commit to playing the whole day, then, the rest is history.

Thanks for joining us for Lightning Round today, where can we find your legacy content?

The Life of Ali

The Ali from Cairo Life Cycle

Ali from Cairo has always been one of my favorite cards. My first tournament winning deck in the nineties featured Ali from Cairo, Diplomatic Immunity a bunch of Counter magic, Disintegrates and Fireballs. I’ve had the idea for these alterations for a few years now, and have been talking to Mark Poole about it at various Magicfests. At Magicfest Reno I came up a bit at the Black Jack tables, so I quickly invested my winnings in what you see here, before I could give it all back to the house. May it be a reminder that there are few things that are permanent in this world, Death, Taxes, and Ali from Cairo. Everyone stay safe out there.

The Opener: First Pick Theros Beyond Death and other thoughts.

Welcome to another edition of The Opener! Theros, Beyond Death is back as the Ranked format on Arena so hopefully my insight can help you with your drafts.

The first pick of the draft is not extremely important but it’s fun to think about. It doesn’t always get played and it’s the pick with the least amount of context. At this point in the draft, you don’t have any idea what any other player is doing yet. Your goal when you’re first picking should be, in general, to take the most powerful card.

If you have never read a ‘what’s the pick?” article before, I will be showing you a few pack one pick one (P1P1) scenarios and I will tell you what I would take and my reasoning behind it. I will also give an honorable mention. So let’s get started!

The Picks

My Pick
Heliod’s Intervention. The best cards here are definitely Voracious Typhon, Dreaful Apathy, and Heliod’s Intervention. Most of the time, I believe that it is correct to take the rare in this format. In fact, it took me a long time to find picks for this article that weren’t super obvious. This pick is close but it is not an exception. Heliod’s Intervention is very often a blowout. I find that a reasonable amount of the time it is a two-for-one, three-for-one or even better! Even the life-gain mode is not a terrible fail-case and will catch opponents by surprise. I also believe that it is an underrated card that I believe players should take higher.

Honorable Mention: Dreadful Apathy is premium, common removal and it is what I would take here if the Intervention was not in the pack.Voracious Typhon is a great card too but I am giving a slight edge to Apathy for being removal.

Grand Prix Reno Tournament Report – 13th

It feels weird writing a tournament report about a limited GP given that: (a) I didn’t make top 8, and (b) all Magic Fests are cancelled for the next two months because of the corona virus. For whatever it’s worth (likely very little), I’ll be discussing my overall experience with Magic Fest Reno, including my main event sealed deck and my Day 2 draft decks. I hope you enjoy it!

Reno is only about two hours from my house in Folsom, which is awesome. Waking up late is never a good start on tournament day, and this was no exception. Luckily, it was Friday, and the tournament I was about to play in was just the PTQ, not the main event. My best friend and original manatutor, Tony Benedetti, (he taught me how to play magic when we were about 10 years old) was meeting at my house and we planned to leave for Reno around 7:30/7:45. I usually get up by 6:30 but I accidentally slept in until 7. Oops. I was just getting out of bed and making a pot of coffee when he knocked on the door. Both my 2 and 5 year old daughters were fast asleep, and my wife looked at me with those big “WTF” eyes as she’d just woken up about two minutes earlier. “Better early than late” was not the response she was looking for, but it was the response she got.

The medium guide to pioneer’s combo winter

I had been putting off writing another pioneer article. Every week since Theros: Beyond Death came out I’d assumed that THIS week, they’d ban some Theros cards. Yet, it keeps not happening, now with assurances that it won’t happen for awhile. Not entirely unreasonable. There’s a pro tour coming (yes I know they call it something else now, can’t for the life of me remember what they’re called though), and changing things up too much right before one isn’t always a good idea. Mr. Duke also makes a good point that the metagame has had the ability to continually evolve. A 49% winrate for inverter is very surprising, but is perhaps representative of how hateful the format has become. I’m not sure Gideon of the Trials is quite a playable card, but it certainly can be when your opponent’s combo kills them if they don’t get him off the table.
